Miami-Dade County

Innovator in Community-Driven Planning

Miami-Dade County is an innovator in its project request and development framework as it relates to Smart Mobility and Context-Sensitive Street Design. While its vision in each of these areas remains a work in progress, the SMART Moves and Quick Build programs create an interface for community members to request investments in community-driven projects. Additionally, the iterative process undertaken by the SMART project and changes through the Better Bus Project with Transit Alliance reinforce this practice.

With regard to Smart Mobility specifically, Miami-Dade County is a founding member of the Open Mobility Foundation, and the Florida legislature passed legislation allowing for automated vehicle testing on Florida roads, opening the door for future pilots.

In terms of its vision for Context Sensitive Street Design, Miami-Dade County has reorganized parts of its planning function to enable integrated land use and transportation planning. Much of the work in the County has been supported by Street Plans and the Green Mobility Network, two organizations instrumental in developing the Quick Build program.
It will be interesting to see if Miami further develops and refines its vision in each of these areas, or continues to rely on community-driven initiatives to help shape the future of mobility and public right of way planning in the County.
